There are several ways to take a screenshot on a Mac, depending on what you want to capture. Here are the most common methods:
To capture the entire screen:
- Press Command + Shift + 3 (This will take a screenshot of your entire screen and save it as a file on your desktop)
To capture a portion of the screen:
- Press Command + Shift + 4 (This will turn your cursor into a crosshair, allowing you to select the portion of the screen you want to capture)
- Once you’ve selected the area, release the mouse button to take the screenshot
- The screenshot will be saved as a file on your desktop
To capture a specific window:
- Press Command + Shift + 4 + Spacebar (This will turn your cursor into a camera, allowing you to select the window you want to capture)

Note: In macOS Mojave or later, a thumbnail of the screenshot appears in the lower-right corner of the screen for a few seconds. You can click the thumbnail to edit the screenshot, or wait for it to automatically save to your desktop.
